What is my education and experience background?
I received my Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry at Saint Mary's University. I am now in the Immunology Graduate Program at the University of Michigan for my PhD. My previous research background is researching the infectious disease, malaria, and researching the connection between autoimmunity and aging. I am currently investigating the immune response to brain cancers.
What are my core values as a healthcare professional?
While I have plenty of values as a healthcare professional, I will limit my thoughts here to three—Integrity, compassion and collaboration. Integrity involves doing what is morally right. Compassion is knowing that I am working with a human being who is going through a lot. Anyone who is going through a journey fighting cancer deserves empathy, patience, and respect. Collaboration is working with my team to achieve the goal of benefiting the patient. Doctors, patients, scientists, technicians, etc. all must work cohesively to reach the goal.
How do you aim to work with patients?
I aim to be empathetic but still upfront with the information you should know about your situation. I know it can be hard to hear, but I believe a deeper understanding of what is happening is often better than not knowing. Our bodies are truly personal, so having cancer take it out of our control is a tragedy. Having some knowledge and guidance takes some of that control back and provides more self-assuredness.
When Brandon is not pursuing his PhD he can be found enjoying a newly released fantasy novel.
